Home of the TigersWhere Achievement is a Reality! We Are FamiliesYou’ve no doubt heard the phrase “Family Values.” At the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), we like to say that we “value families.” We firmly believe that it is not possible to have a successful school district without the active involvement of parents, guardians, and caregivers, both at schools and in the home. Whether prodding their children to finish their homework, volunteering inside a classroom, spending countless hours raising money, or taking time during the day to address board members, parents and families drive what we do here. There is nothing that gives me a greater sense of pride than to go to a meeting attended by hundreds of engaged parents—even to discuss issues on which we might disagree. But in order to get parents, guardian, and caregivers to care deeply about schools, our campuses –and school districts—must care deeply about this important stakeholder group. In my view, this means keeping parents, guardians and caregivers informed, and providing ample opportunities and outlets for moms and dads and guardians to keep us informed. With that in mind, on October 1, we unveiled the new LAUSD Families website, http://families.lausd.net and the Parent Access System, which is a new LAUSD website http://parentaccess.lausd.netthat allows parents access to personalized information regarding their student(s) and other online tools and resources. Featuring a sleek, contemporary design, the sites includes a parent poll; information on the District’s “I’m In” campaign, which emphasizes students exercising, eating healthy, and getting plenty of rest; and links to episodes of “Family Matters,” a new monthly program on KLCS. I would urge all District employees to regularly peruse the LAUSD Families website. It is a critical component of our ongoing, and fruitful, dialogue with thousands of LAUSD parents, guardians, and caregivers. Sincerely, John Deasy, LAUSD Superintendent NEWSUpcoming Dates:
